Reflection
The point of this rap is to show the issue of ocean acidification and a few reasons as to what causes it, why it is harmful, and what we can do to stop it. I try to drive home a few points, obviously that it harms coral, that companies are a big factor in the issue, and that campaigns can be an effective solution to the problem. I believe that using a rap that is well known and love by many youth will drive home the message even clearer, as it is not simply a parody of a pop song that is heard every 2 minutes. Ocean acidification is obviously a problem, but is not the only issue with climate change. The rap itself is an example of a campaign or general awareness piece that can be taken to try to influence people to make better choices and educate them about issues facing our environment. I think if other raps were created showing various other problems with climate change, and some which drive home the point that climate change is real and describe in detail its causes, the issue can be known to today’s youth. While many adults may not get the message, the youth, who are our future policy makers and decision makers throughout the government and businesses, can be influenced by music very easily. I think rap is a very good form to do this in, too, as rhyme is easily remembered and is very much utilized in rap. Also, rap can tell more of a story than many other forms of music can, as it is one of the least repetitive forms and can fit the most words in, so this can be utilized for telling complex issues.
