Living in the Northeast, memories of white Christmas and snow days are some of my fondest memories. However, in the past couple years, the snow stopped, the white fluffy landscape being reduced to a couple flurries in the sky just to be quickly out washed away by rain. I felt that it was important to have a piece that wasn’t fantastical and just based in the reality of climate change, a universal feeling that is felt throughout the region. I decided to place my artwork on Christmas Day, when you wake up and expect a frozen landscape for you to go outside and build snowmen’s. Except these children’s reality is rain and flooding of their streets and they are only able to draw images of Christmas in the window, even sweating through their thick winter garments. I wanted to emphasize the theme of “you don’t feel the impact till it’s too late” because I don’t want this imagery piece to become a reality. I feel that it’s important to raise awareness and educate people on the true effects of climate change, because if we are able to inspire others to take action and reduce their carbon footprints then we might be able to slow the rapidly disastrous climate change.
