Reflection
My main purpose in creating this painting was to demonstrate the different ways human actions hurt the oceans. Propelled by excessive manufacturing and climate change driven forest fires, the icebergs are melting at an alarming rate, endangering many species on planet Earth. In my piece, I merged the figures with the landscape to show how people and nature are intrinsically linked—any action against the planet also harms humanity. I also used cardboard as a canvas to show how materials can be reused in the visual arts. Despite the darker meaning of my painting, something that gives me hope is the growing push for environmentalism by the younger generations. Many high schoolers that I know have started to purposefully decrease the amount of waste they create, and I think this passion for waste-reduction will only grow with time!
