Mother

she is becoming sick
she is becoming wary,
I tell father
tell him she is drifting away
but he ignores me
says what I speak is false,
but I know mother is leaving
I know she is leaving me,
her temperature, worse by the day
her voice, raspy when she speaks,
I tell father she is moving on,
tell him she won’t come back
but still he ignores me
and when he comes home at the end of the day,
she is already gone.

Reflection
I wrote this poem to portray our ocean as a person. My "mother" represents the ocean, and all that it is going through, while my "father" represents the people in life who ignore the crisis and act like there is nothing wrong. While researching this topic, I learned a lot more about the home that the ocean provides for animals, and how its condition is affecting them. I wanted to convey the urgency of the situation through poetry. After learning so much about the effect that water has on life, I will start to do things to better ensure that the ocean gets less polluted. I will continue to recycle, conserve, donate, and so much more. No matter how small my actions are compared to this hugely consequential crisis, one person can help make a difference.
