Because music has a strong impact on me, it led me to wonder about the effect of music on the ocean. The article "A Symphony in the Sea: How Music is Helping Save the Great Barrier Reef" by Paige Proctor caught my eye. I read about the marine biologists who dedicated their research specifically to bioacoustics. Bioacoustics is a major tool used to heal coral reefs by recording healthy reef systems and playing it to damaged systems through a special speaker. Healthy coral reef is known to sound like a harmonious orchestra of instruments, all producing a rich variety of sounds. Wanting to incorporate this in my work, I represented the ocean as a flow of music coming out from the trumpet. I also wanted to represent the marine biologists as musicians, for they are playing the music the reef makes. It is truly amazing that biologists were able to create such technology, which incorporates the art of being able to reproduce sounds that nature itself has created. I hope my art conveys the healing of our reefs with music in a hopeful way, inspiring others that creative ideas can still greatly help our oceans.
