My Neighbor, The Polar Bear
Istanbul, Turkey
2022, Senior, Poetry & Spoken Word
Meteorologists say it’s going to rain anew,
Not just any but acid rain, too.
More acidic than the sour sour lemons,
That were wiped out with the sweet watermelons.
Roofs melt as the acid drizzles,
All while our skin sizzles.
The old mosques, churches, obelisks are destroyed,
But it’s okay, they’re just going to get restored!
Might as well attract some tourists from afar,
Welcomed, with our great hospitality, they are.
Came all the way from the melted Arctic,
Penguins and polar bears that are gigantic.
The animals stared at the Blue Mosque, puzzled,
“What is this giant igloo?” they wondered.
The Australian koalas now live in Istanbul,
And the exotic fish fill our public pool.
So where are the glaciers? There are no more!
Come on, bring them all, and open the door.
Climate change was maybe for the better,
Because it brought us all together!
Reflection
Reflection
Having been an avid animal lover since I was a child, climate change is an issue that genuinely intrigues me. Every year, or even every day, our world and our climate become more and more damaged. With my poem, I wanted to raise awareness of the fact that not only humans but animals, plants, as well as the world’s cultural and historical heritages are being closely affected by these unfortunate events. I believe we all have a role to play and a responsibility to take.
