My Role in the Climate Crisis: A Visual Journey
Chujia Yang
Shenzhen, China
2024, Senior, Interactive & Multimedia

Project Description: My project is an interactive project composed of 9 individual cards, each representing either the impacts of climate change or actionable steps people can take to address these challenges. These cards are arranged to form a large map that narrates the journey towards a sustainable future. Each card highlights a specific aspect of climate change. Each card includes a brief description or message. Damage cards explain the particular impact of climate change. Action cards suggest steps I take to mitigate these impacts. This project combines multiple forms of media to enhance its impact. The texts on each card provide context and detailed data for each visual element. Some cards may include interactive elements, such as pop-ups. This combination tells people my story and inspires their action on climate change. My project is designed to inform my story and foster a sense of collective responsibility in the fight against climate change. My interactive book is displayed in video format and uploaded to YouTube.

Pop-up card featuring a white dove with outstretched wings holding a branch, set against a background with the words "POLISH" and "SMOKE. Colorful 3D paper models illustrating environmental themes like pollution, carbon emissions, and renewable energy. Colorful pop-up book showing a scene with labeled sections: "Urban Expansion" and "Clearing Forest." Includes houses, trees, a bridge, and a pond with a lily pad.

A pop-up card with a lit dome-shaped LED structure, featuring text "Lighting LEDs" and "15% of global electricity consumption" on a blue background.

Reflection

The project is a set of cards, each describing the effects of climate change or the actions people can take to mitigate those effects. When these cards are combined, they form a visual representation of the path to combat climate change. I have always been attracted to the making arts and find them to be powerful tools for expression and communication. The process of creating this project was both challenging and rewarding. Each card requires careful background research and creative design that balances factual information with the visual elements. This process has left me depressed about the severity of the impacts of climate change, but it has also given me hope and determination to inspire change. The message of my artwork is that every action of an individual counts. While the climate crisis is huge and complex, individual efforts can have a significant impact. Through this project, I aim to educate and motivate viewers to take small and large actions towards sustainability.
