Reflection

The piece I've written is composed of three different sections that personify the ocean. A simple melody centered around two major chords introduces the subject: a serene ocean, deliberate in its decisions and content with itself. The repeating left-hand notes add to this undisturbed and peaceful environment as this atmosphere represents an idyllic perspective. However as the chords intensify, sometimes blatantly discordant, the threat is made apparent: climate change. Despite relentless efforts by activists to raise awareness and advocate for policy change, sea levels and temperatures continue to rise due to lack of action. Marine environments have been devastated and many remain in danger as each precise ecosystem is thrown off-balance. Species that have previously thrived have become endangered in the last decade. The discord and urgency in these notes reflect the tumult in the ocean and the grave consequences of climate change. However, hope is not lost. A combination of strings and trumpet lead up to a bittersweet tune that expresses the need to continue striving for action. These three parts—piano, strings, and trumpet—are intended to come together in positive finale, the last notes a reflection on human capability to better the world.
