I chose to compose a song about the effect of rising sea levels on Northern elephant seals. In my science class we are learning about the dangers of climate change, and how it can affect animals in various forms. I learned from research that the seals witness big storms and are often separated by their mothers when they are under one month old! I could only imagine the struggles that the animals would have to endure, so I decided to write from the perspective of a Northern elephant seal. In this particular song, the seal is looking back on his/her life before the big storm when he/she was separated from his/her mother. I wanted to have small flashbacks in the song, moments when the seal was becoming more hopeful, and moments when the seal was stating the bitter truth. Writing this song has made me realize how impactful our everyday movements are, such as driving a car. I will try to improve my habits by walking more and encouraging others to do the same. I wrote this song to help people (myself included) recognize the pain that innocent animals have to suffer through because of us. I hope that in writing this song, humans will attempt to replace their bad habits with ones that help our environment.
