Famously known for its ancient architecture, endless canals, and romantic atmosphere, Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations today. Personally, I have always wanted to visit the city and experience its lifestyle. However, as climate change continues to affect our world by raising water levels, the city has experienced increased amounts of flooding every year. While Venetians utilize temporary preventative methods such as diverging waterways and raising pavements, these methods are ultimately ineffective if the fundamental problem of climate change is not addressed by a global effort. In my painting, I imagined what it would be like to tour Venice if no actions are taken to prevent further water level rise. I painted over the vibrant buildings with blue oil paint to demonstrate how the water will mute the colors. Additionally, I added divers in the city, but only as passersby who would wonder what the city was once like. I hope to convey a sense of urgency in the audience. Around the world, many other cities such as Bangkok, Thailand, or Houston, Texas in the United States experience the same problem. As global warming becomes increasingly pressing, we risk not only our shelters, but also our cultures and knowledge. Through this experience, I realized the seriousness of problems caused by climate change around the world. I plan to further advocate for this cause and take actions in everyday life such as using renewable materials and conserving energy to contribute to resolving climate change problems.
