I decided to create a film essentially reading a poem my friend Alex Brkic wrote. It covered the ocean and juxtaposed the benefits and good it offers to the malicious actions we carry out which speeds the negative effects of climate change. I accompanied her work with my own perspective of the ocean and footage I had taken around marine life and the sea, since I’ve always had happy memories traveling to the coast, and I grew up in San Diego. I also supported the metaphor of the ocean being a symphony with my own background of being in orchestra and being raised in an environment where music is prominent. I’ve always felt passionate about music, and grew up playing the piano, viola, ukulele, violin, and guitar, so I felt that I could really address this theme and relation to the sea in a visually impactful way. My inspiration for this film really stems from my love of combining prose with cinema. Furthermore, I intend on studying film production in the future and delving into the studies of this art, so it was a medium I was very comfortable with. When doing my research for this year’s theme, I learned a lot about ocean trash and pollution. It was really disheartening to look at our polluted coasts and to see the amount of marine life killed or constricted by our own garbage. From this, I’ve gained a sense to take action. I’ve been actively looking for initiatives and internships relating to ocean cleanups. Hopefully this summer I’ll be able to volunteer and help contribute to the large issue of cleaning our oceans.
