Reflection
My father suggested I go to a museum about Haenyos to learn more about the Jejudo culture. At first I was skeptical whether or not it would be interesting, but the museum proved to be so much more meaningful than I thought. I was able to learn so much about the history of haenyos and the women in Jejudo, and it gave me an idea for what I wanted this years Bowseat submission to be about. Of course, this allowed me to come up with ideas for my piece, especially as I have always enjoyed going to the ocean, as well as scuba diving. I thought if I told my story, alongside with the story with my ancestors, it would fit into this year's theme very well. I think that in this film, I was able to deep-dive into so much about my own culture. As I go to an international school, sometimes I forget about my own country, or my own traditions. its easy to put them aside and think of them as bothersome, especially because my culture is not the majority. However, when doing this project, I was able to reflect and deeply understand the history, and the tradition of this place. It truly inspired me to appreciate who I am, and who I stand as. It made me embrace my nationality and my culture. I would also encourage people who watched my film to embrace their culture and to learn more about it, because even though it may seem embarrassing or unimportant, our heritage is such a huge part of what makes us unique and truly us. Through exploring our culture, we are allowing ourselves to be built into so much more of an amazing character.
