My idea for this piece was to use the Mother Nature as a symbol. I wanted her to be the main focus of the drawing, so I portrayed her as a drowning girl, showing that we do not have much time until the damage to Earth is irreversible. Around the girl are several species of marine animals, specifically those that thrive in coral reefs, which are quickly diminishing due to rising sea temperatures. On the right side, I have drawn possible solutions to help battle the effects of climate change. For example, countries could change to solar and wind energy rather than depending on oil, which releases carbon emissions when heated. These emissions create a layer of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, trapping heat inside. The heat causes sea levels to rise (melting ice caps in North and South pole) as well as warms sea temperatures. Because of this, many marine species are becoming extinct. During the process of creating my art piece, I learned many things about climate change. Shockingly, the last time the atmosphere reached levels above 300 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide (our levels today) was millions of years ago. It is unfortunate many people continue to believe that climate change does not affect them; some refuse to believe that it exists. Climate change is a problem that affects everyone and it is our duty as artists to help spread the message and save our planet.
