Pacific Kelp Forest Crisis
Luke Scherrer
Glendale, CA
2024, Senior, Interactive & Multimedia

Project Description: This submission is an ArcGIS Storymap. A Storymap is a form of multimedia that tells a story through images and text. All the viewer has to do is scroll, read, observe, and enjoy. The Storymap is laid out in a way that tells a “Story,” hence the name of the form of media. The ArcGIS Storymap discusses my personal experience with the damaging effects that the changing climate is having on kelp forests and their ecosystems.

A text box on the map discusses the impact of rising temperatures on kelp forest ecosystems.A fish swims among kelp in an underwater forest, with text overlay discussing environmental impacts on kelp forests.

Reflection

I decided I would work with the Storymap art form. Storymaps excel at taking the reader on a journey to explore my climate story. Additionally, because of my GIS class, I was already familiar with the Esri ArcGIS tools, which interface fabulously with Storymaps. After completing my submission, I came to understand that Storymaps were perfect for representing my appreciation for the natural world, which I think of as an art in and of itself. The way kelp forests build themselves, the way the light streams through the water, the way the bright orange Garibaldi contrast with the kelp--all of these factors make nature the greatest piece of art ever to exist on the face of the Earth. For anyone who reads my project, I want them to see the beautiful images and the dangers these kelp forests face in parallel. I want them to come to understand the fact that kelp forests are threatened. Most of all, I want them to understand that climate change has to be addressed in order to save these beautiful aquatic ecosystems.
