I grew up snorkeling the vibrant reefs of Puerto Rico, curating in me a deep appreciation for the marine environment. The wonder and amazement I felt as a child exploring these underwater worlds shaped my outlook on life. However, when I returned to Puerto Rico after moving to Massachusetts at nine years old, I was heartbroken to find my once-thriving childhood wonderland reduced to a giant pile of white, bleached rubble. The colorful explosions of fish and other marine life had vanished, leaving only a barren wasteland. This devastating experience inspired my creative process and ignited my passion for raising awareness about coral bleaching and other environmental issues. Throughout high school, I channeled my emotions and concerns into art. The process of creating this piece was emotionally charged and deeply reflective. It allowed me to process my grief over the loss of the reefs and transform it into something that could inspire others. My message to viewers of my artwork is clear: we must take urgent action to protect our marine environments before it's too late. Through my research, I have learned about the intricate connections between global warming, water pollution, and the health of coral reefs. This knowledge has reinforced my commitment to advocating for sustainable practices and innovative solutions to these pressing problems. Beyond individual actions like recycling, I am committed to engaging with my community to tackle climate change. I plan to organize educational workshops, collaborate with local environmental groups, and participate in clean-up efforts to reduce waste runoff. By fostering a collective sense of responsibility and encouraging community involvement, I hope to make a meaningful impact in the fight against climate change.
