Reflection

“I painted a conceptual picture of a woman taking a bath and pampering herself.” I wanted my painting to speak of how blinded and selfish we are, that we would take clean baths while our sea animals are swimming in our trash. I want my painting to ask, “Would you take baths in your own trash?”

The cucumbers on the woman’s eyes represent our refusal to see the consequences of our actions and it also represents our yearning to have a healthy life. Our sea animals are always put in danger, and they deserve to have healthy lives.

The faster we stop this horrible littering, the more fish and sea mammals we will have in our ocean. However, if you think about it, and we do not stop this, we will have no fish to eat. Then, some of the sea animals will become extinct, and, there will be a shortage of other animal species’ in our oceans. In fact, sea animals are very important in our food chain.

I found a very clever quote by Jacques Yves Cousteau, an oceanographer. He said that the oceans were sick but that they were not going to die ; There is no death possible in the ocean – there will always be life, but they’re getting “sicker and sicker everyday”. This is taking place because of us! The world dumps 2.6 trillion Lbs of plastic waste into the environment everyday. That equals more than 7,000 Empire State buildings!
