Plastic, the Sea and I
Prerana Pai
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
2016, Senior, Poetry & Spoken Word

He shut me down relentlessly
As I tried uncountable tries
Not ready to listen to one word I say
Nor my lamenting cries

My pleas were ignored, with resolve strong,
Not given a second thought
Just to do what was clearly wrong
For us two, I was extremely distraught

The two of us were the sea and I
The latter confined in human prisons
The former in plastic ties
The arrogance of the world, risen

I, his conscience sighed dejectedly
As he threw the bottle in the sea

As he had innumerable times before
And will do again, a million times to be

Hi! I would describe myself as a mature, smart girl, with strong opinions, and a loud voice. I am very passionate about protecting the environment.

Shame and anger course through me looking around at what humans have done. I am an activist on behalf of the environment, now and forever. I am a pure vegetarian, as a result of my love for animals. (My parents are very encouraging of this). I try my best to leave behind a minimal carbon footprint, and inspire others to do the same.

“Plastic, the Sea and I” displays the basic human instinct, as part of the earth, to not hurt other parts of it. We knowingly crush the urge to live in harmony with all creatures, willingly choosing to pollute our oceans, and the saddest part is, we try to make meaning of our actions, warping our thoughts to trick ourselves into believing, what we are doing isn’t actually wrong.
