Reflection
For this year's Contest, I decided to build on the idea of irony. What would happen if the roles were reversed? How would we feel from the others’ viewpoint? Our actions to the planet reflect back on us. The reality is that the things we do to the ocean will ultimately inflict damage upon ourselves in the end; the effects are ready in motion. One of the ways I thought to address the climate crisis in a positive way, plus the biggest inspiration behind my illustration, were woodblock prints, a type of traditional Japanese art popular in the 17th through 19th centuries. The bottom of the illustration is based on Koi fishponds. To give my art contrast, I wanted it to be dull but colorful, calm but loud, at the same time. Putting the rippling tranquil sea under the pouring seething mess represented the disturbance of peace in the ocean.
