Safeguard the Barrier

Reflection
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of Australia have existed alongside the Great Barrier Reef for eons, incorporating its diverse wildlife into their culture and lifestyle. Global warming is one of the greatest threats to the world's largest reef system, causing widespread coral bleaching that eliminates any and all signs of previously flourishing ecosystems. The only way to save the reef is by joining together as people. I used the image of a young Aboriginal girl to stand as the beacon of hope for both the people and the reef. A strong female icon that will rebuild her reef will inspire all. The rays of healing emanating from her represents the powerful desire to heal the reef, ultimately resulting in its slow recovery. I made this piece to spread awareness about the reef bleaching, as well as the actions that were taken by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to save this keystone of their culture. Although I personally do not live by the sea, reading and learning about the new evidence and tragedies caused by climate change inspires me to take action in any way that I can. In the future, I plan on majoring in Marine Science/Environmental Studies in college and engaging in both advocacy and research.
