Reflection

With its pristine turquoise lakes, abundant forestry, and rivers teeming with salmon, British Columbia is often viewed as the epitome of an environment untouched by climate change. However, contrary to this idyllic image, recent reports suggest a much grimmer situation. With an estimated 65,000 dead salmon and 40 percent of the province susceptible to drought, BC salmon is projected to be eradicated in 50 years. My appreciation for the nature of my surrounding, British Columbia inspired my research and artwork. My research inspired my work as I chose to accentuate the contrast between BC's perceived natural beauty and the imminent crisis of environmental degradation in my artwork. Creating this piece evoked feelings of sadness and urgency, highlighting the critical need for environmental conservation. By portraying a serene landscape marred by the lifeless bodies of salmon, I highlighted the urgent need for action to protect these ecosystems.
