At a time of rising sea level, changing weather patterns, and increasing desertification, we may feel powerless and overwhelmed by the changes needed to revert carbon emissions. Hopelessness is enticing when environments have been compromised by our degradation (through pollution, exploitation, etc.) But with this piece, I wanted to emphasize the idea of hope. While it is not easy, we can bring forth change. My piece mainly serves to juxtapose this idea of hope—signified by the red hues—with current environmental issues. While I chose to depict scattered scenes of the ocean in the background to represent its current dire state, I contrasted them with renewable energy innovations like wind power and solar panels. As for the disintegrated iceberg, I illustrated stitches sewing them together. This conveys the message that by protesting and pushing politicians for changes like Greta Thunberg, we can "mend" our past failures for a greener future.
