Verse 1:
Her eyes follow the flowers
Watching the bees glide from petal to petal
Her shoulders relax
a smile playing across her lips
But little does she know
That the flowers are folding
Creatures are fading
without a trace
Chorus:
The Earth is pleading for our help
Gifted lands are now scarred
The air that’s vital to our survival
Poisoned without redemption
The Earth is pleading for our help
Demolished wildlife vanishing creatures
Spiraling temperatures causing illness
The world we know is slipping away
Verse 2:
She spots smoke covering the sky
Sees all the garbage ablaze near her eyes
It chokes the streets makes it hard to breathe
Holding her nose she keeps drifts on
But little does she know
That its poisoning the air we breathe
Some thick invisible danger
Contaminating food and water
Bridge: So she gathers the strength gathers all it takes
And fights back against this climate change
It endangers the places she holds dear
To Keep Earth safe
So she gathers her strength gathers all it takes
And fights back against this climate change
It darkens the skies and bleaches the reefs
To Keep Earth safe
Chorus:
The earth is pleading for our help
because of us our home lies shattered
let’s make the planet safe for our future
And keep the world from slipping away
Reflection
As a young girl, I grew up without knowledge about the causes or effects of climate change. However, going to India changed this. I saw the massive amount of pollution, mountains of garbage being burned, and smog that covered cities. I wrote "Slipping Away" to showcase the unawareness of our surroundings and urge everyone to protect the Earth. I wanted the song to reflect things I’ve seen myself and act as a narration revolving around my own life. To accomplish this goal, I illustrated a story that anyone could relate to: a girl sitting outside finding peace in nature, and a girl watching smoke pollute the sky. This song resembles me, sharing these common experiences, and portrays me as a girl who was unaware of the effects. I did this by including the phrase “little does she know” in both of my verses. This phrase is one of the key components of this song: showcasing the unawareness of the girl and switching perspectives to an outside narrator. In the bridge of the song, I wanted to tie together the story of the girl with the narration outside. I did this by changing the chord progression into something more hopeful, adding strings and other instruments to the music, layering my voice, and inspiring a need to make a change. The bridge was the first time that I mentioned the words "climate change," and this was done to tie together the issues described in the previous verses and the chorus. Writing "Slipping Away" helped me understand many of the issues I see to a greater extent, and helped advocate for protecting our planet through storytelling throughout the song.
