strawberry moon

year i:
a year of the wild strawberries
in the rolling meadows.
how they made crowns out of
dandelions and marigolds.
about the july storms that
made the cattle run so fast they forgot they were cattle.
year ii:
where the plastic meets the oceans
and the sun gets hotter every year.
one where the skies are always gray
and never has a brighter shade.
the grass is no longer green
and the stars don’t shine anymore.
year iii:
this is the one where we find a happy medium.
a middle ground between dystopia and paradise.
we pay more attention to burning cathedrals
and less time figuring out how to keep this place safe.
this ruby gem we call home.
this bursting strawberry moon.
her ribs show and she has dark circles.
she’s imperfect, but she tries.
yes, my love,
she is home.
she is home.
Reflection
With this year's theme, I really wanted to betray the message that growth is a process—how every chance we can get to make a change is vital as a community. I hope this poem sends a message to the majority, as well as inspires others to make a change.
