Reflection
Extraordinary, endless and ethereal. Those are the three words that I would describe the water that makes up our lives. It is one of the basic foundations of human life. It makes up the oceans that interconnect the multitude of land, it makes up the river and lakes that were the foundation of trade and development (such as the miracle on the Han-gang river), and it also makes up simple equations like photosynthesis, which feeds the diverse species of plants that cover the Earth’s surface. However, the perfect balance of water has been broken through the detrimental effects of climate change. The ocean has been rising at a rapid rate in which humans cannot adapt to. We have witnessed the disastrous effects of sea level rise. They have been broadcasted on innumerable platforms. Tuvalu is estimated to be the first official country to be completely submerged by rising sea levels. One country after another will be submerged. This drawing is a direct depiction of such events and was inspired by the young climate activists, leaders and members of the climate movement that fervently lead the battle against climate change. The girl represents humanity, the same humanity that has failed to mitigate or adapt to the imbalance of water. I want every viewer to know that our future lies in humanity’s hands. This future you are seeing in my work should remain a figment of imagination and an expression of concern rather than depict the future. Through this experience, I have learnt of the extremity in which climate change will affect us. I will join protests, lead organizations, and more. But most importantly, I will keep expressing this zeal through my art.
