Reflection
Fueled by our selfishness and indifference, climate change gives rise to a serious environmental issue–sea levels rising. Scientists project that sea level could rise up to 3 feet and destroy the homes of more than 150 million people by 2100. Due to our careless activities that have harmed our planet, the Earth is now warning us. More people will be forced to leave their hometown and surrender their ordinary, daily lives. In this sense, this environmental crisis is slowly destroying our past memories. Although few people are experiencing this, the challenge will eventually affect everyone in the future without any concrete solutions. Therefore, in my artwork, I wanted to emphasize our loss of daily life and irreplaceable memories as a result of our complacency. A Batman toy, baseball, glove, and book–items that symbolize our childhood–are slightly submerged in water, representing our fading past due to sea rising. Also, the messiness of layout suggests how sea rising disrupts our daily life. The wet and wrinkled family picture in the center illustrates our fate if no further action is done to stop continued sea rising. This distorted image serves as a reminder of the consequence of human ignorance. After finishing the artwork, I once again realized the seriousness of the seas rising. I hope that we can further halt sea level rise and prevent more people from suffering their loss of daily life. It is imperative to safeguard our precious ocean and memories associated with it.
