As I look down in the pool of water,
So clear that I can see through the surface.
Breaking the tension and letting it flow,
Ripples out slowly and letting it go.
How could you be so important to us?
No one can live without you, it is true.
The main source of life creating balance,
Thousands of species are nurtured by you.
How could you be so evil sometimes, though?
Locking me under the waves off the shore.
Dragging me and the paddleboard away,
Till this day I’m still grateful for my fate.
How could you be so unpredictable?
Flooding the roads or drying the fields out,
Life is either being destroyed, or made.
What does it mean to me, to you, to us?
I’m looking in the water, the mirror,
And nothing else could be any clearer.
The craftsman of life is superior,
That brings hopes and blessings, or even fear.
As I look down in the pool of water,
Can’t see anything except for myself.
I saw the answer, the source of all life,
The day that it’s gone, we will have no hope.
Reflection
This poem is important to me; it was one of the best writing sessions I have ever had. My own experiences and research played the biggest role in the process of creating. I have a lot of personal experiences with the ocean, some are good and some are not. The entire structure of the poem was influenced by music from several different artists to lend a musical and poetic flow to it. It is important to know that water is the source of all life, but some people in areas like Dhaka don’t have sustainable sources of clean water and easy access to it. I realised how powerful and superior water is to all life and the world when I was creating the piece. Water was home to the first life on earth and is the reason for recent destruction that is devastating people and the economy. My message to all the readers is that water is a reflection of yourself. You know how water impacts you, benefits you, and might potentially harm you. People should find connections and spread awareness about the value of water.
