Although most are caused by tectonic activity, climate change can also contribute significantly to the risk of Tsunamis. Rising sea levels coupled with the impact of landslides and melting ice caps all contribute to the increased incidence of tsunamis. My sculpture shows a tsunami that is so immense that it engulfs the planet earth. Although deliberately exaggerated to reinforce the potential dangers of climate change, I feel that it tells a very real story and sends out a stark warning about the dangers of climate change. I have created the tsunami to represent the hands of climate change, and to demonstrate its ability to overwhelm and engulf our planet. I have used dark colours to generate an ominous mood, however have used light blue at the ends of the hands to show oceanic crust encircling the globe. This has been created to reflect my fear of global warming. I discovered in my Geography lessons that if sea levels continue to rise, communities along the coast globally would be at increased risk of the effects of tsunamis. Even small rises in the sea level can force tsunamis to travel further inland and cause more devastation to peoples’ property and lives. My purpose is to raise awareness of these potential issues, which pose a grave danger in both the short and long term to people worldwide. I wanted to demonstrate immensity in combination with a warning to people of the importance of respecting the dangers of nature and natural disasters. I would subsequently hope that anyone who saw my work would note the importance of putting in place proactive ways of reducing the risk of tsunamis by addressing global warming, and its risks.
