I chose to create my piece based on puffins because I have always found them to be beautiful animals. I was saddened to find out that they are being threatened due to a lack of fish because of climate change. I wanted to symbolically represent this unfortunate reality that the puffins are facing as of right now, by incorporating fish bones and white roses, which are often used at funerals to portray innocence and sympathy. The three puffins in the piece directly symbolize the title of the piece, "The Flight Towards Death," which is the likely fate of global puffin populations if action is not taken in order to reduce the impact climate change has on their food sources. After researching this topic, I have been much more aware about what I am purchasing and getting rid of. I try to use minimal amounts of plastic and be conscious about where certain food items my family and I purchase are coming from. I hope someday soon that puffin populations will be quickly saved and restored to the state of which they once were.
