The Girl Who Sang the Fish
Elisa Miksch
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
2022, Senior, Art (2014 – 2023)

A clay sculpture of a seated figure with flowing hair, decorated with colorful leaves. The figure wears a calm expression and has intricate patterns on its face.

Reflection

Living away from the sea, it can be difficult to remember that our actions still impact it significantly. Everybody knows that the ocean is under major threat from climate change and general human interaction, but we feel powerless to do anything about it. Because what could we do, so far away from all coasts? But the truth is that everything counts. A win for the environment in your town means a win for the entire earth. This piece is not an obvious call to action, as there is no quality of urgency, no visuals of pollution, not even any further connection to the ocean. The girl is just sitting alone, singing her song. Undemanding and unaccusatory, this piece aims to remind people of the action we undoubtedly must take, without evoking that feeling of dread and helplessness regarding the situation. Hopefully, more people will feel inspired and worthy of helping to tackle this challenge of fighting against climate change and saving our oceans.
