Reflection

At my school two years ago, there was a problem with the pipe system resulting in the basement water fountain spewing brown and murky water. All of the students and faculty complained relentlessly about having to walk up a flight of stairs to go to the other water fountain. We took for granted how easily we could access water. On the other side of the globe in Eritrea, children have to walk thirteen to eighteen miles per day for water. Additionally, such water is found in a river and is rarely clean. Even though we all live on the same planet, our experiences with water are different. This realization inspired me to depict water as a maternal figure who gives herself to her children, the people of the world. In a family, it is nearly impossible to ensure that all children have their fair share. I used small circles with moments where the people interact with water to show how everyone relies on, uses, and gets water differently. In all, I wanted this art piece to portray that not everyone has equal access to water, but water is still a gift because of its necessity and the joy it brings.
