Reflection
I came up with this idea when visiting the local sedge weaving community in my hometown. Upon interviewing the weavers, I came to realize that Sedge Weaving is an integral part of Thailand's culture. Unfortunately, due to the influences of Industrialization and mass-produced plastic goods, Thai Sedge Weaving now nears extinction. When talking to the weavers, I learnt of the craft's roots and of the many lives it has changed. Furthermore, I learnt that the weavers actively fights against plastic pollution, through their unique and inspiring art form utilising exclusively natural materials. Talking to the weavers had inspired me to capture the beauty of the craft, whilst highlighting the threat of the craft's extinction if nothing is done. Through exploration of the theme, I was able to connect with nature through the sustainable art form, and was able to learn about and convey the beauty of my cultural heritage. I hope the audience is inspired to preserve all forms of sustainable artistry. I hope they are inspired to connect with their cultural identity, and by extension their cultures ties with nature. By preserving these rare forms of artistry, we can all help to mitigate the impacts of global warming while embracing the cultural identities that make us unique.
