Hong Kong is my home–a crowded city where skyscrapers meet mountains and the ocean. But its rapid urban development has destroyed coastal habitats. As I looked into the various human caused-threats facing the ocean in Hong Kong, I discovered the significant endangerment of the Chinese white dolphins (pink dolphins). After some research, I realized that major infrastructural projects in Hong Kong such as the Third Runway System project destroys their habitats and disrupts the availability of prey, significantly threatening the pink dolphins. I wrote this poem to express sorrow, but also to spark awareness for the dolphins. Their numbers have declined from 158 in 2003 to just 37 in 2020 in Hong Kong, based on a research done by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. We must learn to build with nature, not over it, before these dolphins go extinct.
