The Ocean in the Air
Hong Kong
2024, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word
Hong Kong bustles, a urban symphoney
As her yearning echoes for a greener day to come
Though, as her
Factories, Cars, planes,
All salve away,
Dumping tonnes of ash,
floating away.
As her atmospheric trash,
Clouds the sky.
For a desolate day, at the inception of March,
As the oceans bring vapour, invading her air,
electronics, decorations, livelihoods
All fade away,
As her atmospheric trash
Clouds her sky.
Her own gas,
forces her to gasp.
Yet Hong Kong seeks a sustainable fare,
To heal the wounds her excesses laid bare.

Reflection
As southern China and specifically my hometown of Hong Kong had their humidity slowly rise, life during peak humidity periods(during spring) has just progressively gotten worse. Outdoor activities became worse, breathing become difficult, and my life generally became worse. My breathing is already difficult due to various factors, especially my allergies to dust mites. I wanted to do this story justice, as it is a major result of rising climate change issues. Rising humidity levels is a major problem for my region, and in Hong Kong, rising climate change has caused problems. I hope that me writing this poem is able to help bring light to climate change problems, especially in southern China.
