Reflection
In our society, it is expected to follow the newest fashion trends. Shockingly, Earth.org reports that 92 million tons of textile waste are produced annually and about 10% of CO2 emissions. Plastic waste and CO2 are driving factors in the world's climate change problem. This rise in temperatures and emissions has caused many environmental problems, including coral bleaching. This fact motivated me to find a way to repurpose old clothing and create artwork that highlights the significance of minimizing textile waste. My artwork showcases the climate change effect of coral bleaching, depicted by the grey and dull fabric, but it also demonstrates how we can stop the problem by reusing old clothing, represented by the reused clothing the coral is made of. By promoting the purchase of repurposed and used clothing, I hope to raise awareness of the harmful effects of the fast fashion industry and educate my community about the solutions.
