To Heal the Ocean
Rose Weathers
Narberth, PA
2020, Junior, Performing Arts

Verse 1:
Washed up on the sand
Plastic bottles and
All our problems, they won’t float away

It’s food for animals
They can starve were not sure
But thank god there’s disposables to hold our drinks

Pre-chorus:
We can move the earth and sky
Do we know
It’s different with one car ride

Chorus:
If everybody gave up a bit of what they have
Looked up to where the future is, the futures ours to craft
We’re speeding way too fast, getting closer to the edge
Mistakes been made, it’s time to change, we still can heal the oceans pain

Verse 2:
All the plastic and
Fertilizer lend themselves to problems
With what they rearrange

It’s not too late to change
To clean up all of our waste
This is what we have, our home needs to be saved

Pre-chorus:
I hope we change the earth and sky
Do we know
It’s really us who decide

Bridge:
Lessening our carbon footprint, using bikes not taking planes
Climate change treaties and reef conservancies
Supporting leaders who care about all of these needs
There’s hope because there are so many things that we can change

Reflection
Reflection

Through years of camping by the ocean and spending much of my time outdoors, I have developed a connection with the sea life and birds who live there. My favorite place, Bahia Honda, which is in the Florida Keys, was struck by Hurricane Irma just three years ago. When I went back to visit, the effect was devastating. Through some research, I learned that climate change can greatly worsen hurricanes. Someday, hurricanes may even swallow up the entire island. This would negatively impact much of its marine life. Plastic and other trash in the ocean has a detrimental effect on the marine life as well, as it kills many animals through starvation after they swallow it. It is not right to kill animals solely because we can't be bothered to make less waste. Through this contest, I have researched ways that I can help slow climate change and reduce waste. This research has given me great hope, as there are actually many things which I can do. I have learned to stop buying single-use plastics, to lessen the amount of meat and dairy I eat, and to walk, bike, and take trains instead of drive. If everybody makes small changes such as these, then there is great hope for our oceans. My song "To Heal the Ocean" is meant to inspire and urge people to take these steps. Through our ability to make these changes, I find hope.
