Touch Grass (A Rap Parody)
San Antonio, TX
2025, Senior, Performing Arts
To all the people in a place who need a change o’ pace
Allow me to find these beautiful bushes in your tushes
This proves to make moves with all the humans
The boring, flooring, snorin’, is where i’ll find ya
You think it’s a chore, but u need restorin’, come find ya
I question askin’, time passin’, life aint lastin’–
But I just can’t stop
Cuz one of these days, ya gotta hit the pot
I mean, not a big deal or anything, just, why not
Mow the lawn, chop chop, shut off the laptop
Now check it, I got more plants than cow and sheep
Believe me, sweetie, there’s enough to feed the needy
No need to be greedy; there be green friends on the Earth
See what’s on those layers, yeah—true they’re lifesavers
Jump in, get it all over, come over
Tell your friends: “Stop and go outside!” ‘fore they go cross-eyed
You’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
Throw your hands in the dirt, cuz yeah it don’t hurt
You’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
To the homies wit no nature gotta change yo behavior!
Ya, you’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
I know you think its uninterestin’, got the air conditionin’ but
I know some people tonight that should be feelin delight from greenery, scenery
Straight up, honey, really, I’m askin’
Most of these fellas think I be smackin’ but they be lacking
They distracted, their emotions impacted
Soon as they touch some vines (6)
Then they can heal their mind (7)
You can ask, if they feel alright, “what you seein’?”
Mother make you smile,
Fit this in yo style
We gon’ be here for a while, I’m gon’ go call my crew
You go call your crew, we can rendezvous
at the park ..around..two
Make Plans to Leaf,
Better find some relief
Ditch the pillow case,
pull up to a green space
Go outdoors and involve the senses, yo, fog lenses
No anxiety, just society
Conversate for a few—’cause in a few, we gon’ do
What we came to do, ain’t that right boo
Forget the telly, just head to the garden and
Watch sunsets on our belly, and just be happy
You’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
Throw your hands in the dirt, cuz yeah it don’t hurt
You’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
To the homies wit no nature gotta change yo behavior!
You’d love it if you touched some grass, ya
I know you think its uninterestin’, got the air conditionin’ but
I know people tonight that should be feelin’ delight from that greenery, scenery
Reflection
The "touch grass" saying has admittedly become a huge meme on the internet. It is a universal sign (and warning) for gamers all around the world, encouraging them to go outside and engage with nature. Originally, I wanted to do a film about someone who was addicted to their phone and was stuck inside. However, I wanted to incorporate the right amount of "funny" and "go do something." This sprouted (haha, get it?) into a rap idea, and it kind of just grew from there. The lyrics contain a lot of wacky stuff cuz I wanted it to be cheeky and chill. My friend 'Tima encouraged me and gave me a lot of inspiration for the lyrics. Being able to express myself in a fun way, like a rap, really did help me find the passion for the project. I messed with some stuff on Garageband, rhyme-zoning lyrics until they sounded just about right. The song is based on The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa," which a laid-back beat. I did a rap with 'Tima before, so it was easier for me to get the groove goin'. When I spent a lot of my time outdoors filming, I realized it was the most fun I'd had in months. I was with my buddy, Max. We filmed a bunch of goofy stuff, which I think added to the rap to make it more homemade-feeling. Going outside, touching grass (LOL), interacting with my friends... all of it was really fun and in the end, was the thing that made the project shine a lil. If you listened to any of my rap, just remember one thing. Going outside IS and CAN be fun! Ya just gotta do it.
