Turtles Can’t Dress
Giavanna Shvarts and Catherine Sanchez
Merrick, NY
2022, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word

Whose tie is that? I think I know.
Its owner wears it like a bow.
Full of class even though,
It is worn backwards little did he know

Whose mask is that? Worn on its face.
Covering its mouth and eyes, it looks out of place.
Worn backwards and upside down.
The turtle looks like a clown.

Whose pants are that? Wrapped around its shell.
Looks like the turtle is being held in a polyester cell.
The turtle however does not know why these clothes are on himself,
Because it however, cannot dress itself.

Although the turtle is well dressed,
It does not feel its best.
Trapped and can’t get out,
The turtle would much rather live without.

So whose tie is that? Stopping the turtle from swimming.
To humans it looks fashionable,
But in the end, it is only killing.

Reflection

During our creative process, we took into consideration the various things that are thrown away that might end up in the ocean and tried to incorporate them into this project.
