I created what I did because I feel like there needs to be more effort in saving the North Atlantic right whales. I researched these whales to create this image, and I learned that there are less than 450 whales left in existence. I also learned that these whales are dying out because they swim close to the surface and when boats pass overhead, the propellers shred the whales and make them bleed out. They also get caught in crab fishing ropes and get hopelessly stuck, dying from starvation. This inspired me to enter this competition and create my artwork to try to help save the right whales. I created this piece using colored pencils for the whale and the crab cages, and watercolor for the ocean in the background. I will personally take action on this issue by spreading the word so that people know that whales are dying in the ocean, and we need to save them before they become extinct. This was a very eye-opening experience for me!
