Waking Up
Brooklyn, NY
2022, Junior, Performing Arts
VERSE 1
Waking up and smell the burning forest
Greed is killing our planet
If the climate were a big bank
It would have been already saved
VERSE 2
Burning coal fast and fuel gas emissions
Turn this world into a wasteland
When are we going to realize
We may no longer have a land to live in
(Pre-chorus) If the climate were a big bank
It would have been already saved
Waking up and smell the burning forest
(Pre-chorus) Oh na na na it’s time to realize we can’t eat or drink or breathe normally and no amount of money
CHORUS
No amount of money can save us today or tomorrow if we can’t breathe the air or drink the water
No amount of money can save us today (ain’t no money) or tomorrow if we can’t breathe the air or drink water (^2)
(Pre-chorus) oh na na na it’s time to realize we can’t eat or drink or breathe normally and no amount of money
CHORUS
No amount of money can save us today or tomorrow if we can’t breathe the air or drink the water

The Contest theme really pushed me to go out of my comfort zone because it was challenging to create a funny song about climate change since it is a very serious topic. What inspired me was when I did my research and found funny, ironic sayings about climate change, like how if the problem was about the bank, it would’ve been saved already. The message I want to convey to the listeners through my work is that we need to start acting and not be negligent and selfish, and that our earth is crying for help. We are the only ones who can help stop the damage.
