Water Pollution (From Its Perspective)

I am water,
A liquid with tremendous power
I am responsible for life
And yes, it is a large burden I carry
But I carry more many more things
I carry pain
A plastic bottle
Empty
Drifting in the waves as they take over
Floating a few feet afar
A pair of princess sunglasses
Forgotten by a toddler
Who was too caught up in the excitement
Drifting in the tide
A plastic bag
With painful holes
And the only the characters
“HANK OU”
Are visible
People ducking out of the way as it floats by them
I think as the waves roll over
Would it hurt to pick up the litter?
Instead of watching it accumulate
In a place
That is shared with other nations
Would it hurt to pay attention?
And not allow myself,
Your source of life
To get destroyed
Because one was careless
Would it hurt o be a role model?
To show others
That keeping something clean
Takes no less than a mere minute
You can help yourself,
Your community,
Your world
By wading in the water
Picking up trash
And remembering
That you helped in a movement
A movement to save me,
A movement to save our planet

My inspiration for my work comes from a story. My parents are from Kashmir, a state in the northern tip of India. A lot of my family lives there, so in the past years, we have gone to visit. When we go, I am not allowed to drink any water UNLESS it is from a bottle or it has been bottled. I recently asked my dad why he did this, and he gave me a straight answer. The water there was polluted and was unsafe to drink. As a child, my dad had gotten sick drinking Kashmiri water, and he didn’t want my brother and I to get sick . Preventing water pollution can save many people from water pollution diseases, like typhoid. I created my work from memory. From all the time I’ve spent at the beach, I have seen so much pollution in the ocean. Items from beach towels to chip bags have littered the water. My personal experience with water pollution also contributed to my poetry piece. Through my exploration of ocean pollution, I learned that there are so many diseases caused by water pollution. Many kids are diagnosed with these diseases; especially those in poor countries who don’t have proper water filtration. I did this to show that I want to demolish water pollution. It is a horrible thing that should not exist. I want to be part of getting rid of it.
