People need to know that it’s possible to come back from catastrophe. When a whale dies, it’s a tragedy. When a whale falls, it’s an opportunity. While the whale is dead, new life is coming from its death, enabling a new wave of possibility. This is similar to our current state of pollution, including pollution of the waters. We are in a horrible state right now, but we can recover and change, becoming better than ever. This is not the end if we choose to act. Choosing to recycle, to support green practices, to advocate for the end of fossil fuels. Through this piece, I want to illustrate a new beginning through an end; rather than advocating through words, an image has the capacity to impact an individual at a deeper, more innate, level. It pulls parts from the natural world around us, using shells and stones from a shore that I’ve frequented my entire life, one which I want to protect.
