Climate Hero: Rachel Carson
Reflection
Reflection
This piece was inspired by Rachel Carson and her irreplaceable contributions as a marine biologist and author. She and this piece have taught me a tremendous amount about climate change and the journey our society has taken since we first discovered the affects of pollution on our planet. Through her work, Carson energized thousands of women and men to fight for our planet and ‘the sea around us.’ In this piece, Carson is shown holding up the umbrella, as it represents the environmental movement she helped construct and advance. Carson contributed to the protection of both humans and the countless exquisite life forms inhabiting our oceans by sheltering us from marine debris, oil spills, overfishing, algae blooms, and chemical pollutants. The umbrella she helped create provides us hope – or light – of preserving our one and only planet. It is our responsibility to carry on the environmental campaign that Carson began; that way, we can one day bittersweetly let go of the umbrella.
