Reflection
My piece was inspired by my love for doodling when I was younger. Growing up, I was always buried in my sketchbooks and doodling at any opportunity that I got. This year’s theme resonated with me as I pondered on how I could not only bring awareness to the severity of wildfires, but make an impact on both the communities I belong to and the communities that surround mine. For my piece, I was inspired by my desire to bring awareness to the recent California wildfires and how we as humans have the responsibility to correct the curation of climate change that we continue to practice. I wanted to express how being active and involved should come as a second nature to others and myself just as how doodling in my sketchbook was never second guessed. Being creative during this process and challenging myself to resonate with this theme makes me feel proud of my art and how it can be used as a beacon to spread awareness to others. I chose to use acrylic paints and oil pastels for my painting because they are mediums that I am very familiar with since I was young and also allowed me to be more free with my work without worrying about making mistakes. I have engaged with this medium in the past throughout my childhood and even now as I continue to grow as an artist. Through exploring this theme, I learned that awareness is just as important as making a physical impact. I want to teach my viewers that they have the power to make a difference from the walls of their home or under the blankets of their bed. Having the will to make a difference is what will harbor a difference to face climate change and its consequences.
