More Environmentally Friendly Halloween Costume DIY Ideas
October 20, 2022Hey, everyone! It’s Sydney from the Bow Seat TikTok here.
Halloween is right around the corner. This means it’s time to start finalizing costumes. If you’re feeling crafty this year, try a DIY costume!
Halloween is not an environmentally friendly holiday. An estimated 2,000 tons of plastic waste from Halloween costumes end up in the landfill each year. When thinking about your DIY, it’s a good idea to start by looking through what you already have and trying to borrow or thrift what you don’t. If you’re still not convinced, you can even enter your costume in the Ocean Awareness Contest!
Not sure where to start? Here are five ocean-themed costumes to inspire you this October.
Octopus
This fun costume was made using a t-shirt and some pool noodles. So if you have some of those lying around, give it a try! It may not be the most practical choice, but it sure is adorable.
Jellyfish
This cute look can be made by attaching some ribbons and LED string lights to a tutu. For a version that’s a bit easier to sit in, you can decorate an umbrella instead of wearing a tutu and hold it over your head.
Dory/Blue Tang
Looking for something more subtle? Try adding some felt eyes to a blue beanie to make a Dory-inspired look. Pair it with a blue and yellow outfit for full blue tang style.
Fish
If you enjoy painting, this is the costume for you. Carefully cut out a fish shape from some extra cardboard you have lying around and paint it to look like your favorite fish or in your favorite colors.
Shark fin
I had to end this list with one for the pets. A felt shark fin is an adorable option for pets of any size. Want to wear it yourself? Attach the fin to a headband!
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
