A Love Song for a Giant Green Anemone
Elodie Griffin-Schmidt
San Francisco, CA
2022, Senior, Performing Arts

Verse
It was low tide in the intertidal
When your grassy green color caught my eye
I stuck a finger out
I poked around
When you reached out for me
My heart skipped a beat

Chorus
My heart went gobbly goop for that gobbity gloop
The apple of my eye, A very handsome guy
That big giant green sea anemone
Has got a big giant green hold on me

Verse
I hear you live till 80
That’s great cause I do, too
And since you’ll be my anemone
My life’s duty is to handle your enemies
No critter or crab will get a hold of you
No sea star or spider will make you blue
You will be no fish’s stew
Your only predator is my love for you

Chorus
My heart went gobbly goop for that gobbity gloop
The apple of my eye, A very handsome guy
That big giant green sea anemone
Has got a big giant green hold on me

Bridge
Oh but darling, I’m sad
I’m so, so sad
I hear your population is stable
But darling, I’m unstable
At the thought of you washing away

Verse
Your habitat is at risk!
Waste oil wants to say hello
Agricultural runoff, too
The waters are warming
Ocean acidification is no vacation!
I can’t bear to see you go away
The suns bleaching you out
Your great green color is running astray
My giant green love, you better be here to stay. Cause….

Chorus
My heart went gobbly goop for that gobbity gloop
The apple of my eye, A very handsome guy
That big giant green sea anemone
Has got a big giant green hold on me

Reflection

On a field trip to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, I first met the protagonist of my love song: the giant green anemone. I was entranced by its grassy green color and its wild tentacles. When my marine ecology teacher introduced me to the Bow Seat contest, I knew immediately what I needed to do. Utilizing the skills I’d gained in a songwriting class I took last year, I put my feelings into song. I want viewers to share my admiration of the beautiful creature, and understand the importance of protecting their habitat.
