Climate Hero: Jean Nouvel

A large plastic sheet is inflated by a fan in a garden, covering objects underneath. Trees and a building are in the background.

Reflection

Greenhanok is my Koreanized take on the sustainable architecture of greenhouses. Inspired by hanoks, or traditional Korean houses, this work has sloped roofs and paneled windows. The whole structure is made out of recycled vinyl sheets and trash bags. The completed work was installed outside of Seoul International School, which was also inspired by Korean architecture when designed back in 1972. The French architect Jean Nouvel has served as one of my greatest inspirations for this piece. Nouvel is a world-renowned green architect known for his clever use of eco-friendly materials and sustainable designs. Buildings like One Central Park embody Nouvel’s passion for the environment whilst seamlessly fitting in with its surroundings in Sydney. Like Nouvel, I created Greenhanok to take a stance on climate change while also blending it with pre-existing Korean surroundings. Nouvel has been my architectural idol for a long time, and he is rather underrated for his environmental endeavors compared to greats like Frank Lloyd Wright. By investigating Nouvel’s work further, I was able to appreciate the thought he put into his creations and was amazed at how he channels complex imaginations into physical buildings. As an aspiring architect, I hope to be like Nouvel in the future.
