Reflection

I wanted a way to convey loss. As I researched climate change, I realized just how much could be lost if actions aren't taken. On a vacation to Hawaii as a child, I got to snorkel in a coral reef. However, this experience is one that future children may not be able to have. Coral Reef bleaching is happening at an alarming rate, and action must be taken. As I reflected upon my childhood and what could be lost for future generations, I decided I wanted a melting ice cream cone to be the main focus of my art. To me, a melting ice cream cone captured the feeling of loss caused by climate change perfectly. The raw feeling of sadness when one drops an ice cream cone as a child was similar to the feeling I felt as I read about the increasing losses caused by climate change. I truly hope that as people view my art, a couple things stand out to them; firstly, the emphasis that climate change is caused by humans and it is not a natural things; secondly, I want my viewers to remember the feeling of losing they cherished as a child; and finally, I want my viewer to see what is at stake. I really hope that my viewers understand that the damage created by climate change cannot be simply undone. Humans are irrefutably the cause of climate change, and more people need to understand that. I have learned that while I thought climate change was an accepted fact, not everyone actually acknowledges it. I hope that my art will inspire even one person to learn more about climate change.
