We Rise
Valerie Fan
Markham, Canada
2024, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word

A poem titled "We Rise" explores themes of despair, destruction, and hope, touching on nature, struggle, and resilience.

Reflection

Throughout my life, I have always feared climate change. I was scared of the unknown and of something that seemed so big of an issue, that there would be no way that I could fix it. However, a teacher once told me it's better to try and make a difference instead of waiting for others to make a difference. This message was the focal point of my poem. Through all the damage that our planet is enduring, we can use our strength to help make a difference collectively. While most of the climate change issues discussed in my poem are issues that I have already been aware of, the facts that I found made me wonder how we quickly need continue to do our best to stop climate change before it's to late. My poem is a message to individuals who also worry about our future and climate change, who will hopefully become encouraged to start helping our planet.
