Reflection

I came up with the idea for my piece by watching an inspiring short video on how human beings are connected to nature. The video showed how many things in nature are physically similar to human beings. My work (and creative process) was inspired by the way the human nervous system is similar to the branches of trees. As a part of the process, I decided to draw the nervous system like tree branches. I later used actual leaves from trees (with green acrylic paint) in the form of printmaking to add contrast to the white and red areas of the human figure. I chose two different mediums in this project. The first medium was ink. Using a red pen, I drew out all of my nerves which were depicted as trees throughout the body. The second medium I used was acrylic paint. I used actual leaves and the method of printmaking around the human body to provide contrast and a connection to my idea of the human nerves looking like branches of trees. What I learned from the exploration of the contest theme was that humans are all alike. No matter where we’re from or what gender we are, internally, we’re all structured the same. Also, this sameness extends to nature, where we are built in a similar way to trees, especially the branches and the leaves which have very similar qualities outside to what we have inside. My message to viewers of my artwork is that some parts of humans are like nature and some parts of nature are like humans. We are connected to each other, like a family. We are not separate from nature, rather, we are all a part of the same community.
