Reflection

I’ve created a piece of art for this contest hoping to get recognition for pollution in our marine life. I began with the concept of today’s plastic being nonbiodegradable. Pieces of litter that are not biodegradable float around oceans for years and years. In order to show this, I made pieces of plastic coming out of a whale’s blow hole. This would mean that the plastic would have made its way from human life, floated into the ocean, and eventually into the whale’s system. Once it is done damaging the whales inner body, the nonbiodegradable plastic comes out to start its cycle again. This becoming a problem that will never go away, unless something is done. I chose a whale as my marine life because of how important it is to the food chain. As the population of whales goes down the more indanger our entire ocean becomes.

I have created this piece with multiple mediums. Using watercolor for the whale and as a base for the waves. Then I went in with a fine point pen and used my own “scribble” technique for creating details such as shadowing or barnacles on the whale. I then used a larger pen to define lines in the waves, and later went in with marker to add more contrast between the whale and the waves. Adding one of the most important parts, I used oil pencils to create pieces of plastic coming out of the whales blow hole.
